This leaflet describes measures that are designed to facilitate travel by rail. The general section of the leaflet covers measures applicable to stations and trains, describing the requirements to be met to provide access for the disabled (e. g. parking spaces for road vehicles, lifts, escalators) and a customer-friendly environment (e. g. waiting rooms, loudspeaker announcements, cleanliness, safety/security). It also gives important indications on optimising the structure of passenger information (e. g. station maps, signposting, departure and arrival information, details of train consist, etc.). In addition to the general section there are 5 appendices (A, B, C, D and E). Appendix A explains the purpose and aims of the passenger orientation system, giving a detailed description of the rules governing the standard reproduction and use of pictograms. Appendix B contains pictograms with explanations as to the function, pictorial content and use of each. The pictograms are grouped according to specific criteria (e. g. customer services in the station, hazard warnings, etc.) and listed in a table of contents. Appendix C gives indications of the production of departure and arrival information, showing a specimen example. Appendix D gives a non-exhaustive list of the main signs and abbreviations to be used in the various types of timetable information provided for use by customers (paper timetables, Internet, etc.). Appendix E contains a checklist of all the services that should be available in major stations.
